INDEPENDENT
by choice.
Film-makers
by instinct.

Founded in 2003 by producer VIKTÓRIA PETRÁNYI and Director KORNÉL MUNDRUCZÓ, Proton Cinema was initially created so we could tell our stories. This helped us become a destination for local talent, and as Hungary became a recognized and preferred destination for international productions, we quickly gained a strong reputation for those seeking a resourceful and trusted partner who balanced creativity, quality and invaluable industry connections.

Our FOUNDERS
KORNÉL MUNDRUCZÓ
Director
Kornél Mundruczó is a film and theatre director, the founder of Proton Cinema and Proton Theatre, the latter together with theatre producer Dóra Büki. He studied both acting and directing at the University of Theatre and Film Arts in Budapest, and found his profession in the latter. Kornél is an internationally acknowledged director whose works have been introduced in various international A-category film festivals. Among five films of his that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, his 2014 film White God won him the Un Certain Regard Prize. Following the foundation of Proton Cinema, Kornél established Proton Theatre. As a theater director, Kornél tells about contemporary lives with a strong sociological reflection, and are often described as realist. It is essential to him that nothing is black and white, thus he explores reality through showing contradictions. His theatre plays are mostly international co-productions. He often works with the same actors in his productions, who also take part in the creative process.
Viktória petrányi
Head of Productions
After graduating as a producer at the University of Theatre and Film Arts in Budapest (Hungary), she has been working alongside director Kornél Mundruczó for over two decades, shaping independent, thoughtful, and award-winning films and theatre productions that challenge cinematic and theatrical conventions. Whether producing Hungarian-language feature films, co-producing international projects, or line-producing high-profile productions, she upholds an unwavering commitment to quality—regardless of the scale or complexity of the work. Her approach to filmmaking is deeply human-centered, focusing on projects that ask questions rather than provide easy answers. She believes in cinema’s power to reflect on societal issues from multiple perspectives and to provoke thought through artistic expression. Beyond producing, she is a passionate advocate for discovering and nurturing emerging talents, ensuring that new voices in European cinema find their place on the international stage. An EAVE graduate, Producers on the Move alum, and ACE board member, Viktória is dedicated to supporting independent, value-driven filmmaking. Through Proton Cinema, she continues to cultivate an outsider spirit—one that embraces risk, artistic freedom, and a relentless drive for authenticity.

When we initially chose the Proton name, it was because we were starting small but had an explosive energy and desire to do great things.
